Explanations of the Continuity terms

The 180 Degree Rule- Not crossing over an imaginary line between two characters when filming (unless a long take) in order to keep spacial continuity. This allows the audience to understand where the characters are in relation to each other and prevents confusion.

The camera is kept on one side of the subjects throughout.

Match on Action- Keeping the same action from one shot to another. E.g Opening a door the same way in both shots, if cut correctly this should appear to be a smooth transition.

Shot/Reverse Shot- Where the camera cuts from one point of view to another to create an understanding of spacial relationship and point of view.

Editing

Completed our editing today and put the video on the network with DVD backup.

Problems faced:

• Footage that didn't quite fit together. E.g changes in positioning between each shot. Next time we will have to make sure the people in the film remain in the same positioning whilst filming that sequence in order to keep continuity.

• Editing the footage down to just one minute.

How we overcame these:

• Put a fade inbetween to suggest a passage of time.

• Cutting the footage carefully, eventually lowering it down to the one minute mark.

Filming Part 2

We finished the other part of filming on the 16th December. This was the superhero sequence with Alex running around the building.

Unedited footage saved as a project on the network for editing at a later date!

Now onto editing!

Filming Part 1

We managed to get half of our filming done today including the bits with the continuity requirements!

Parts with Continuity editing:
Match on action when the Superhero rushes into the room.
Shot/Reverse Shot during dialogue sequence.
180 Degree Rule during the dialogue sequence.
Problems faced:
Finding appropriate areas in which we could film.
Finding a time slot which all members of our group were free to film.
Bad lighting in building.

Hopefully we will be able to get some filming done!

Task Four

We have just finished discussing our decisions on how to produce our preliminary task and have come up with some pretty good ideas!

• We began our discussion and found that we wanted to go with the theme of a superhero having a conversation with a villain. 

• We will initially show the superhero as someone in control with quick camera movements and low angles. This will change when the superhero enters the room. (Match On Action), changing to eye level so the audience can connect emotionally. 
• We will then incorporate the final two contiunity editing (180 Degree Rule and Shot/Reverse Shot)
• techniques into the conversation the hero and the villian have.

Here are some superb examples from our storyboard...

•  The people acting in the film will be Nathan (Villain or NAT) and Alex (Superhero).
• Props will include a Cape (Superhero), Glasses (Villain), Shirt and Tie (Villain) and a Cat (not a live one) for the villain.
• We will be filming outside for the superheros introduction, on the grassy area of the college and inside a classroom for the conversation.
• We will be filming the conversation sequence on Wednesday Period 4 and the outside sequence on Thursday Period 3!
