Explanations of the Continuity terms

The 180 Degree Rule- Not crossing over an imaginary line between two characters when filming (unless a long take) in order to keep spacial continuity. This allows the audience to understand where the characters are in relation to each other and prevents confusion.

Here is an example we found really helpful from Youtube...

Here is our version of the rule...

The camera is kept on one side of the subjects throughout.

Match on Action- Keeping the same action from one shot to another. E.g Opening a door the same way in both shots, if cut correctly this should appear to be a smooth transition.
Example from our piece...

Shot/Reverse Shot- Where the camera cuts from one point of view to another to create an understanding of spacial relationship and point of view.

Here is our use of this technique...

The point of view cuts from one character to another.

Here is a great example from film...

Spacial relationship and point of view are brilliantly outlined by this sequence.

  1. good practice to show techniques used in actual films - even better if you can screen grab the relevant shots in the sequence and then comment on each

  2. You need to apply your sequence to both shot reverse shot and the 180 rule.

  3. Well done guys on the successful completion of your prelim. It was successful in meeting all the requirments and was a successful and funny piece with a few innovative touches like the Cat. You went to alot of effort in props and costume. As I pointed out in class, some of the framing could have been tighter and the lighgting was too dark in some shots. Both are easy to improve. Having said that, it was a really good effort and very popular with the students as well. Well done and now take this success forward to the real thing
